Peru Balsam Oleoresin is a niche raw material, heavy and demanding, yet absolutely exceptional in its fragrance. It's not an "oil for everyone," but a perfumery- and aromatherapy-grade material that, in the hands of an experienced user, offers spectacular depth and longevity.
Peru Balsam Oleoresin (Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae) from Salvador
Peru Balsam Oleoresin is a thick, dark oleoresin with a consistency similar to molasses and a deep, warm aroma reminiscent of vanilla, cinnamon, and caramel. The scent is intense, balsamic, and long-lasting, with a strong adherence to the skin, making this raw material particularly valued in natural perfumery and specialized aromatherapy formulations.
Unlike light essential oils, Peru balsam is a heavy, bold ingredient intended for use in very low concentrations. Its character is enveloping, sensual, and deeply grounding.
What exactly is Peru Balsam Oleoresin?
Peru Balsam is an oleoresin , not an essential oil. This means it contains both an aromatic (volatile) fraction and a high molecular weight resinous fraction. As a result:
- It has a much more long-lasting fragrance
- It has a strong affinity for the skin ("sticks to the skin", connects the scent with the body)
- Acts as a natural odor fixer
- It does not dissolve in water or fatty oils.
- It dissolves very well in alcohol and partially in castor oil.
Natural resin (oleoresin)
Peru Balsam Oleoresin is a natural oleoresin , i.e.:
- Raw material without dilution
- No media
- No alcohol
- Without carrier oil
It is a direct product obtained from the tree ( Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae ), containing:
- Volatile (aromatic) fraction
- Resin fraction (heavy, balsamic)
It is not an essential oil, but it is also not an extract, absolute or macerate - it is a primary raw material (directly from the tree).
Why is it liquid if it's a "resin"?
Oleoresin is not a dry resin.
- Some resins are hard (e.g. benzoin in lumps)
- Peru balsam is naturally thick, sticky, liquid (like molasses)
Origin and acquisition
Our Peruvian Balsam Oleoresin is wildcrafted and sourced from the forests of El Salvador. The resin is sustainably harvested through controlled incisions from Myroxylon balsamum trees. The harvesting process takes 10 to 15 days and involves repeated extractions of the oleoresin from a single tree, respecting its natural regeneration cycle.

Application
Fragrance compositions and natural perfumery
Peru Balsam Oleoresin is a classic ingredient in natural perfumes, acting as a fragrance fixer and carrier of deep, balsamic notes. Used in very small quantities, it extends the longevity of the composition and adds softness.
Grounding and emotional aromatherapy
In Peruvian aromatherapy, balsam is often used in compositions that promote a sense of security, stability, and comfort. It is also effective in relaxation and meditation practices, but only in very low concentrations.
Cosmetic Formulations (Advanced)
Due to its strong affinity for the skin, it is sometimes used in specialized balms, ointments and protective preparations (rather than in massage oils) – only by experienced formulators and after appropriate dilution.
