Boswellia sacra essential oil (frankincense sacra) is obtained by steam distillation from selected grades of Hojari resin harvested in the mountains of the Dhofar region in Oman. It belongs to the Burseraceae family and to the chemical groups of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and monoterpenols. It has a resinous, warm, radiant, earthy and balsamic aroma — classified as a base note. Hojari resin is obtained under a special privilege granted by the Omani royal family to selected distillers. Aromatherapy using frankincense oil supports well-being and is not a method of treatment.

Both species are referred to as frankincense and belong to the same Burseraceae family, but they differ in their chemical profile, aroma and region of origin. Boswellia sacra (Oman, Hojari grade) is regarded as the royal variety — rarer, more expensive and with a more complex, deeper aromatic profile with a distinct lemony and resinous note. Boswellia carterii (Somaliland) has a softer, more enveloping character, with a higher β-myrcene content (16.51% in batch FRK-130) and the presence of serratol. Both oils have similar aromatherapeutic applications, but they differ in their aromatic nuances and chemical composition — a GC/MS certificate is essential when selecting a specific species.

Hojari is the highest grade of Boswellia sacra resin, obtained exclusively in the mountains of the Dhofar region in Oman. It is distinguished by its exceptional purity, brightness and complexity of its aromatic profile — it is regarded as the most valuable frankincense variety in the world. Harvesting Hojari resin requires a precise process and is regulated by the Omani royal family — only selected distillers have access to the raw material. Our oil is distilled from three unique varieties of Hojari resin, which provides exceptional depth and complexity of aroma.

The oil belongs to three groups of compounds: monoterpenes (cleansing, respiratory), sesquiterpenes (anti-inflammatory, grounding) and monoterpenols (soothing, skin-regenerating). This combination of three chemical groups gives Boswellia sacra an exceptionally versatile therapeutic profile — combining respiratory, skin and emotional properties. The composition has been confirmed by GC/MS — the full report for batch FRS-111 is available on the product page.

This product is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation — not by CO2 extraction. CO2 extraction (using supercritical carbon dioxide) produces a product with a richer composition, containing non-volatile components (e.g. boswellic acid) that do not pass into the steam distillate. Frankincense CO2 extracts are available on the market, but they are significantly more expensive and have a different application profile. Steam-distilled oil is the standard in aromatherapy and diffusion — it retains the full spectrum of volatile aromatic components responsible for its therapeutic properties.

Approximately 2–4 drops per 30–60-minute session in a well-ventilated room. The oil is particularly suitable for meditation, breathing practices and evening calming rituals — it supports mental clarity and inner harmony. It blends well with woody and balsamic oils (cedarwood, sandalwood, myrrh), citrus oils (orange, lemon, bergamot), floral oils (lavender, rose, geranium) and spicy oils (ginger, cardamom, turmeric). Avoid combining it with cinnamon bark and clove in larger amounts. Breaks between sessions are recommended.

For topical applications, the oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or cosmetic base — approximately 1–2% for facial skin, corresponding to around 6–12 drops per 30 ml of base. It is suitable for the care of mature skin and skin requiring regeneration, in night creams, serums and blends supporting scar repair. The product description states that the oil is generally non-toxic and non-irritating — it may irritate the skin only after oxidation. A patch test is recommended before first use.

The product description states that the oil is generally non-toxic and non-irritating — it may irritate the skin only after oxidation. It is one of the safer essential oils used in aromatherapy. A patch test is recommended before first use. There is insufficient clinical research regarding the safety of use during pregnancy and breastfeeding — caution and consultation with the attending physician are recommended. Aromatherapy supports well-being and does not replace medical care.

Boswellia sacra is indeed a single botanical species — the three unique varieties do not refer to different species, but to commercial grades of Hojari resin. Hojari is the regional name for the highest-quality Boswellia sacra resin from the Dhofar mountains in Oman. In the frankincense industry, this resin is traditionally divided into grades according to colour, purity and place of harvest — including green Hojari (the most valuable, pale green and very rare), silver Hojari (white/cream) and black Hojari (darker and more resinous). Distillation using several grades at the same time may produce a richer, more complex aromatic profile than distillation using a single grade. Precise details regarding the specific varieties used in this batch are available in the GC/MS report on the product page or upon request.
