It belongs to the Burseraceae family and to the chemical groups of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and monoterpenols. It has a resinous, warm, radiant, earthy and balsamic aroma — classified as a base note. Hojari resin is obtained under a special privilege granted by the Omani royal family to selected distillers. Both species are referred to as frankincense and belong to the same Burseraceae family, but they differ in their chemical profile, aroma and region of origin. Boswellia sacra (Oman, Hojari grade) is regarded as the royal variety — rarer, more expensive and with a more complex, deeper aromatic profile with a distinct lemony and resinous note. Boswellia carterii (Somaliland) has a softer, more enveloping character, with a higher β-myrcene content (16.51% in batch FRK-130) and the presence of serratol. Both oils have similar aromatherapeutic applications, but they differ in their aromatic nuances and chemical composition — a GC/MS certificate is essential when selecting a specific species.

Frankincense CO2 extracts are available on the market, but they are significantly more expensive and have a different application profile. Steam-distilled oil is the standard in aromatherapy and diffusion — it retains the full spectrum of volatile aromatic components responsible for its therapeutic properties.

Approximately 2–4 drops per 30–60-minute session in a well-ventilated room. The oil is particularly suitable for meditation, breathing practices and evening calming rituals — it supports mental clarity and inner harmony. It blends well with woody and balsamic oils (cedarwood, sandalwood, myrrh), citrus oils (orange, lemon, bergamot), floral oils (lavender, rose, geranium) and spicy oils (ginger, cardamom, turmeric). Avoid combining it with cinnamon bark and clove in larger amounts. Breaks between sessions are recommended.

For topical applications, the oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or cosmetic base — approximately 1–2% for facial skin, corresponding to around 6–12 drops per 30 ml of base.
