Safety

Safety and warnings:

• Phototoxicity: Cold-pressed lemon oil is phototoxic – it may cause skin reactions after sun exposure if used in concentrations higher than 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil (i.e., approximately 2%).
• It is recommended to use it at a low concentration (1–2%) when applied to the skin – e.g., in massage oils or baths.
• Avoid skin exposure to sun or tanning lamp radiation for at least 12 hours [Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, Essential Oil Safety, 2nd ed., Churchill Livingstone Elsevier, 2014, pp. 87, 330–331].
• Oxidation: Like other citrus peel oils with high (+)-limonene content, lemon oil easily oxidizes.
• To prevent skin irritation, we recommend always screwing the cap back on after use, storing it in the refrigerator, and avoiding the use of old or oxidized oil.
