It is obtained by steam distillation from the wood of Callitris intratropica sourced from Australia. Although called cypress, its chemical profile clearly differs from Mediterranean cypress oil. Instead of a high α-pinene content, it is dominated by heavier sesquiterpene alcohols and exceptionally rare lactones found in the wood of Callitris species.

Batch E1001957 from Australia contains 13.80% α-eudesmol, 13.66% guaiol, 12.87% dihydrocolumellarin, 10.37% bulnesol, and 7.65% γ-eudesmol. The five most important components collectively account for as much as 58.35% of the profile.

In the presented analysis, sesquiterpene alcohols constitute 55.67%, and confirmed sesquiterpene lactones make up at least 16.87%. This means that at least 72.54% of the demonstrated profile consists of oxygenated sesquiterpene compounds. Sesquiterpene Alcohols

Low Monoterpene Content

α-Pinene, δ-3-carene, and limonene together constitute only 1.10%. Thanks to this, the oil does not have the sharp, turpentine-like, or intensely stimulating character typical of many coniferous oils. Its scent is calmer, heavier, more woody, and balsamic.

The low content of easily oxidised monoterpenes and the predominance of heavier sesquiterpenoids also contribute to the good stability of the oil and its usefulness as a natural fixative for fragrance compositions.

Natural Blue Colour

The dark blue colour is associated with the presence of small amounts of azulene derivatives, primarily guaiazulene and chamazulene, formed during the distillation of the raw material. Studies on Callitris intratropica indicate that even small amounts of these compounds are sufficient to give the oil an intense blue colour.

As much as 55.67% of the identified composition consists of sesquiterpene alcohols, among which α-eudesmol, guaiol, bulnesol, and γ-eudesmol dominate. These four compounds together account for 45.48% of the profile, responsible for its woody-balsamic depth, longevity, and calm aromatic development.

The second unique fraction is sesquiterpene lactones – at least 16.87%, including as much as 12.87% dihydrocolumellarin. Dihydrocolumellarin, callitrin, and related compounds are rare chemical markers of Callitris wood, not found in typical Mediterranean cypress oils. It is this combination of sesquiterpene alcohols and lactones that gives the oil its exceptionally full, long-lasting character.

In comparison, classic cypress oils and many coniferous oils base their profile on light monoterpenes. In this batch, α-pinene is only 0.71%, δ-3-carene 0.29%, and limonene 0.10%. Therefore, the oil is not fresh, sharp, or turpentine-like. It is much more balsamic, earthy, and stabilising – aromatically closer to heavy wood oils than classic coniferous oils.

The natural dark blue colour further distinguishes it from other wood oils. However, it should not be directly compared to blue chamomile or blue tansy. In blue cypress, sesquiterpene alcohols and lactones play the main role, while azulene derivatives are intense pigments present in small quantities.
