May Chang essential oil (Litsea cubeba) is obtained by steam distillation from the ripe berries of evergreen trees grown organically in India. It belongs to the Lauraceae family and is sometimes called the “mountain pepper tree”. It has a fresh, sweet-citrus aroma with aldehydic depth — classified as a middle-to-top note. Aromatherapy using May Chang oil supports well-being and is not a method of treatment.
The oil belongs to the aldehyde group — the dominant components of this batch (no. LIT-114, production date: June 2024) are geranial (22.3%) and neral (18.1%), which together form citral, as well as geranyl acetate (5.05%). A geranial-to-neral ratio at this level indicates the purity of the raw material and a proper distillation process. Geranyl acetate — an ester rarely found in such quantities in May Chang — gives the oil elegance and aromatic depth. Sesquiterpenes (including β-caryophyllene and longifolene) provide a warm background, preventing the aroma from being flat.
The quality of May Chang oil depends greatly on the region, harvesting method and distillation time — without laboratory documentation, it is difficult to assess the actual composition and proportions of aldehydes. GC/MS analysis (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) precisely identifies each component and rules out adulteration or dilution. A GC/MS certificate is fundamental evidence of the product’s authenticity and purity. The full GC/MS report for batch LIT-114 is available on the product page.
Approximately 2–4 drops per 30–60-minute session in a well-ventilated room. Due to its high aldehyde content, the oil has an intense aroma — a smaller number of drops often produces a better effect than a larger amount. It blends well with citrus oils (lemon, grapefruit, sweet orange), herbal oils (eucalyptus radiata, rosemary ct. cineole), ho wood and lavender, as well as black spruce and cypress. Breaks between sessions are recommended.
Due to its high aldehyde content, May Chang oil may irritate the skin and mucous membranes — it must always be carefully diluted in a carrier oil, such as jojoba. Low concentrations are recommended — approximately up to 1% for adults, corresponding to around 6 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil. Use should be avoided in people with sensitive or damaged skin. Before first use, a patch test on a small area of skin is recommended.
According to Essential Oil Safety (2nd edition) by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, May Chang oil is not recommended for people with glaucoma. This is one of the few specific contraindications documented for this oil. People with glaucoma should avoid both topical application and intensive diffusion. In case of doubt, consultation with the attending physician is recommended.
May Chang oil is contraindicated for children under 5 years of age. For children over 5 years of age, use requires consultation with a physician or certified aromatherapist and should always involve very low concentrations. Due to the high aldehyde content and sensitising potential, particular caution is advised in children with sensitive skin. The oil should be stored out of reach of children.
May Chang oil blends well with citrus oils (lemon, grapefruit, sweet orange) to enhance freshness, with eucalyptus radiata and rosemary ct. cineole for clarity, with ho wood and lavender to soften its aldehydic character, and with black spruce and cypress for a deeper, “green” profile. When combining several aldehyde-rich oils, the total number of drops should be significantly reduced to avoid excessive exposure. Clinical data on interactions between essential oils are lacking — the recommendations are based on tradition and practitioners’ experience.
