Additional information: Motia vs. Sofia variety
Palmarosa essential oil (Cymbopogon martinii var. motia) comes from one of the two main varieties of palmarosa. Compared to the sofia variety, the motia variety stands out:
- A more intense, rose aroma – reminiscent of the scent of rose oil (Rosa damascena).
- Higher geraniol content – which gives it stronger antibacterial, regenerating and moisturizing properties.
- Used in skin care and emotional balance – ideal for supporting dry, irritated and mature skin.
- Cultivated in India, Nepal and the Comoro Islands, where it grows in sunny, mountainous areas.
Cymbopogon martinii var. motia is a more rosy and intense variety, which is why it is more often used in skin care and relaxation aromatherapy.
Cymbopogon martinii var. sofia is lighter and more citrusy, more often used in refreshing and protective blends.
