An effective blend for improved focus and alertness. 5 facts.

A blend of eucalyptus, rosemary, patchouli, and pine in a 2:6:1:1 ratio increased blood pressure, heart rate, and subjective feelings of alertness, energy, and good mood in healthy volunteers after just six minutes of inhalation. This is according to a study published in the Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Science (Hongratanaworakit et al., 2017). While not a cure for fatigue, this specific, GC/MS-measured composition can be consciously recreated in a home diffuser. Below are five facts worth knowing before reaching for the bottle.

In this article

Fact 1: Rosemary constituted 60 percent of the composition

Researchers from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand prepared the blend in a volumetric ratio of eucalyptus : rosemary : patchouli : pine = 2 : 6 : 1 : 1. This means that rosemary accounted for 60 percent of the formula and most likely shaped its effects to the greatest extent.

The classic structure of the blend was as follows: eucalyptus and pine as top notes, rosemary as a heart note, and patchouli as a base note and natural fixative. The blend was diluted to 10 volume percent in sweet almond oil, and participants inhaled the scent directly from the bottle for six minutes, without using a diffuser.

Fact 2: GC/MS showed a dominance of 1,8-cineole, camphor, and alpha-pinene

The composition of the blend was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Three compounds dominated the composition.

Compound Share in blend Main source
1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) 33.8% Eucalyptus (83.3% in pure oil)
Camphor 14.2% Rosemary (19.2% in pure oil)
Alpha-pinene 12.2% Rosemary and pine

The pine oil used in the study came from Pinus palustris (longleaf pine), not the common Scots pine. In our offer, pine oil comes from Pinus ponderosa, a third, different species, with a warmer, citrusy profile. This is a good example of why it's worth checking the GC/MS report for a specific batch, and not just the botanical name on the label: three different pines, three different chemical profiles.

Fact 3: Blood pressure and heart rate increased after just six minutes

In 30 healthy volunteers (10 men, 20 women, average age 22.27 years), parameters were measured before and after inhalation.

Parameter Before After Significance
Systolic pressure 111.2 mmHg 117.4 mmHg p < 0.001
Diastolic pressure 73.1 mmHg 75.6 mmHg p = 0.004
Heart rate 74.6/min 79.7/min p < 0.001

The authors interpret this pattern as an increase in autonomic nervous system arousal. However, this is not always a desirable effect: in a healthy, young individual, it accompanies short-term arousal, but in someone with hypertension, arrhythmia, or autonomic overactivity, it may be unfavorable. Individuals with cardiovascular diseases were excluded from the study, so it is unknown how such a group would react.

Fact 4: Participants felt more alert, energetic, and cheerful

After inhalation, participants rated themselves as more alert (p = 0.009), more energetic (p = 0.027), and more cheerful (p = 0.014). These were self-reported results on visual analog scales, not an objective test of attention, memory, or work performance.

The proper summary is: in a short experiment, healthy young participants felt more alert, energetic, and cheerful after inhaling this specific composition. This does not mean that the blend cures chronic fatigue, improves memory, or replaces sleep.

Fact 5: This was a pilot study, not clinical proof for treating fatigue

The experiment had clear limitations: no placebo group, no blinding, only 30 young and healthy participants, measurement of only the immediate effect after six minutes, without checking the durability of the effect or its impact on work performance.

The level of evidence can be described as preliminary, concerning short-term physiological and subjective responses in healthy adults. This is a valuable scientific observation but not a basis for using the blend as a substitute for sleep, medicine, or therapy for concentration disorders.

It is also worth remembering the contraindications: high-cineole oils (eucalyptus, rosemary) require caution in cases of epilepsy, in young children, during pregnancy, and with respiratory hyperreactivity. Individuals with hypertension or heart disease should consult a doctor before intense diffusion, as the study showed a real increase in blood pressure and heart rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do essential oils really increase alertness?

In the study by Hongratanaworakit et al. (2017), six minutes of inhalation of a blend of eucalyptus, rosemary, patchouli, and pine increased blood pressure, heart rate, and subjective feelings of alertness in healthy volunteers. This is a short-term effect measured in a small group, not clinical proof of lasting improvement in concentration.

What proportions of oils were used in the study?

The blend was prepared in a volumetric ratio of eucalyptus : rosemary : patchouli : pine = 2 : 6 : 1 : 1, diluted to 10 percent in sweet almond oil.

Is the eucalyptus-rosemary blend safe for everyone?

No. Individuals with hypertension, heart disease, epilepsy, pregnant women, and parents of young children should exercise particular caution or consult a specialist, as the study showed an increase in blood pressure and heart rate after inhalation.

How does this blend differ from lavender oil?

In the same study, lavender oil was tested as an example of a calming composition: it lowered blood pressure and reduced alertness. The eucalyptus-rosemary blend had the opposite effect, increasing autonomic arousal and subjective alertness.

How many drops of the blend should be used in a diffuser?

The study did not test diffusion, only inhalation directly from the bottle. For a home diffuser, it is advisable to start with a small number of drops according to the device's instructions and use intermittent, rather than continuous, diffusion for many hours.
